Sadly, we have had some staff changes recently at Yass Valley Veterinary.

After 3 years, Dr Issy Card has taken a small animal position in Canberra. Our recently married Dr Anne Cusack is relocating to Wagga for her husband’s work, and Dr Natalie Flew is also leaving us to work in an emergency afterhours clinic in Canberra with more suitable hours for her new family. We will all miss these three amiable, dedicated and competent veterinarians and wish them well in their future pursuits.

Dr Stuart Williams, after almost 33 years at Yass Valley Veterinary (15 years as a partner with Dr Peter Gibbs and 15 years as sole principal), is resigning from his full-time position at the end of February. He is looking forward to having a break away from afterhours on call and managing a large staff across two hospitals. Working as a volunteer veterinarian in Australia and overseas, travelling with his wife Cath and spending some much needed time at home and in the garden, is on the agenda for Stuart in the short term.

Dr Tamara Butler, who has been with the business for 17 years, will be promoted to the Lead Vet role when Stuart resigns. Dr Nicole McKenzie will take on the Tamara’s Veterinary Manager role, while Ms Carrie Luckie will retain the Practice Manager role.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and care that each of our departing veterinarians has given to our clients and patients, and their departures will mean a temporary change to our service availability.

Be assured that we are actively and enthusiastically recruiting veterinarians to join our team. We’d like to introduce Dr Josh Tannen, a small animal veterinarian & surgeon, who will be with us until April. This experienced and easy-going locum will be very welcome by the team.

This means we need to examine some of your livestock or have visited your farm every two years, to lawfully dispense S4 prescription medications (eg. antibiotics for foot abscess, antibiotic pink eye medications or ram sedation).

These visits are subsidised and will give you the opportunity to meet our vets on your farm. You can discuss issues such as livestock health, vaccination programs or analgesia for animal husbandry procedures. Please have some livestock yarded for our vets to briefly examine.

Dear Valued Clients,

I hope this message finds you well, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude for entrusting your beloved pets to Yass Valley Veterinary throughout the years. It is with mixed emotions that I share some important updates regarding our clinic.

Over the past three decades, Yass Valley Veterinary has proudly stood as a beacon of exceptional care for the animals in our community. Our commitment to providing round-the-clock veterinary services, 365 days a year, has been unwavering. We've strived to offer nothing but the best for the pets and their owners who rely on us.

Regrettably, we find ourselves facing challenges that have affected the entire veterinary industry. In the last month, we've experienced the departure of two experienced veterinarians, partly due to the demands of our after-hours and on-call duties. In the face of these challenges, we've encountered some staffing hurdles trying to replace two other veterinarians who left in April.

Furthermore, some of our team members are facing personal issues that may affect their ability to fulfill after-hours responsibilities.

Consequently, we are currently operating with reduced staffing levels. To protect the mental and physical well-being of our remaining veterinarians and to maintain the positive culture at Yass Valley Veterinary, we have had to make some necessary adjustments.

In times of emergency, animals may need to be triaged, and non-urgent and routine appointments might need to be rescheduled or postponed with short notice.

Our Immediate temporary adjustments need to be:

Fewer available appointments on Saturday mornings.

So please ensure you’ve secured your future appointments. No after-hours services for companion animal emergencies after 10 pm and before 8 am.
Occasional unavailability of after-hours service during the week and sometimes on weekends and public holidays.

Changes to our after-hours practices:

We request you check your animals before 9 pm to ensure they can receive care before 10 pm.

Our Medechat triaging service will continue to provide advice and guide you to appropriate care.

Work life balance and being a vet.

Some of the situations vets find themselves in can only be explained as unbelievable, from happy times with puppies being born, to the worst of times with aggressive and abusive clients to helping animals that have been exposed to the most heinous of crimes.
Dr Tamara has seen a lot in her 11 years as a Veterinarian, but she loves her job and is a crowd favorite here at YVV.

Being a vet

A lot has changed for me in the last year but coming to work still provides me with some sanity and knowing that I am helping all your animals is still a great motivator. Having a child has meant that I have cut my hours back and finding that work life balance is a lot more challenging but getting to see you all and your pets makes it all worthwhile.

I have worked as a vet since 2009. During my studies in Sydney I also did some after hours work.

Vets deal with people from all walks of life and must handle some hairy situations. I have a couple to share.

As a student vet in Sydney I had a knife pulled on me in consult as I started to discuss the costs involved with trying to save a puppy. The clients were clearly distressed about their puppy and acting inappropriately. It is very difficult as a vet to balance the need to fix and help every animal with the needs of the business. Verbal abuse is something I have had to deal with quite often unfortunately, but a physical threat was incredibly confronting.

The situation was diffused but it is certainly something I will never forget.

As a freshly minted vet up in Queensland, one of my first weekends on call dealt me a case that I was not prepared for in the slightest. There was the sweetest little dog that came in and I was advised that she had been sexually abused.

I was required to report this to the police and the case became very involved.

The dog required surgery and was then rehomed. Unfortunately, she became aggressively overprotective of her new family and had to be euthanased.

This case will forever be in my mind and strengthens my drive to be the best advocate for my patients that I can be.

During my first year I also vividly remember the day that I was required to euthanase 10 animals. A litter of 4 puppies and 6 other individually owned animals. At the time I felt that my world was ending as well. It took a large toll on my mental health but also helped to teach me resilience.

Euthanasia is a necessary common procedure, but it is still difficult to perform. In most cases I am aware I am doing the right thing by the animal, but I would much prefer that I could fix the animal. I guess as vets and pet owners it is something we learn do deal with if not accept.

It is not all doom and gloom though. Most of the time I can help my clients to be more comfortable and live a better life. I especially love working out a diagnosis and treatment plan for medical cases, my problem-solving brain delights in it.

Reproduction is also a favourite of mine, making new pets is very rewarding.

The Magic of Mayhem

Your usual shift as a veterinary receptionist is about to begin. Glancing at your schedule for the day, it will undeniably look remarkably different by 6pm. You inspect the clock and view the hand about to tick over to 8am – it’s almost time for the phone lines to open.

You square your shoulders and bravely meet the eyes of the other receptionist across from you as you prepare like soldiers would for war; it’s go time. Your headset starts ringing and you have seven callers on the line in the span of a few seconds. The schedule looks full already but you don’t give up, searching to see where you can possibly fit them all in. Moving around the colour-coded appointments like a real-life game of Tetris, you fist-pump when you accomplish what seemed impossible 10 minutes ago. This continues for a few hours; an endless cycle of being seemingly full for the day but not able to turn away callers with sick pets who you know from experience may be urgent cases.

Some of the calls are decidedly less urgent. You spend 6 minutes on the phone with a client who assures you that their dog has been getting ‘oxtun’ for years and they need to order some more. You rack your brain trying to work out what ‘oxtun’ could be, presuming it to be some sort of drug, before realising that the elderly caller is actually trying to order “ox tongue” for her dog… You provide her the correct number for the local butcher.

Meanwhile, you can see your other receptionist carrying her fifth boxful of injured wildlife out the back for a vet or nurse to assess; by the way the box is bouncing about in her arms and making an awful screeching sound, you presume it to be a boisterous cockatoo. Good luck with that one, guys!

By the time the clock reaches 11am, you scurry into the break room to boil the jug for your second (or third) cup of coffee before retrieving the multiple vials of blood for the external pathology courier whom you all lovingly refer to as “The Blood Man.” You don’t let the sight of the four different types of bodily fluids you see being tested in the lab deter you from that coffee you were making. And yes, that’s right, I said four bodily fluid types… use your imagination!

Back at your desk, the cutest puppy imaginable is in for its first vaccination and hobbles behind the reception desk to say hello. And while many would assume that veterinary receptionists only cuddle puppies all day, the reality is that they also have to be constantly prepared as the first to assess and respond to any emergency calls.

Both phones ring at 1pm, and with your receptionist’s equivalent of the “spidey-sense”, predict that these will be the “big calls” for the day. As suspected, one caller describes how their puppy has eaten a whole box of rich, Belgian chocolates while they were at work and the second client requires urgent help for a calving at a rural property. You get to work quickly, asking the dog owner to bring their pet into the vet hospital immediately and confirm the address and contact details of the client for the calving which a vet will have to go out to as soon as possible.

You race out the back to let the vets and nurses know while your other receptionist works at rescheduling some of the non-urgent appointments to slightly later in the day. One vet is out the door with his nurse as quickly as he can to the calving, while the others prepare for the urgent case coming through the door.

A short time later, you watch as the cheeky chocolate-eating puppy is out the back, vomiting to expel the toxins they ingested into a bucket (and no-doubt reminding some staff of distinct instances from their youths which they’d rather not remember).

The rest of the day flies by with countless vaccinations, consults and hospital patients, and before you know it, the vet who was sent out to the emergency calving exhaustedly returns, their overalls covered in substances one would rather not think about (or smell) for too long. You dread to think about what their assigned work car must look like inside!

Eventually, the clock ticks over to 6pm and the phone lines finally close, allowing any other emergencies to be handled by the appointed after hours vet. The receptionists heave a sigh of relief, finally getting a break from the non-stop sound of the phone ringing and everyone prepares to go home.

One thing I have learnt about being a veterinary receptionist is that it certainly consists of more than just booking appointments; it is about managing the “magic of mayhem” that exists in our workplace in which everything can change in the blink of an eye… or the ringing of a phone.

But we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Working with family

Our vet nurse Mikky values her family above all else and when she talks about her colleague at YVV she calls them family. There is a lot of trust that goes into working in the veterinary industry and we have it in spades at YVV.

Family has always been incredibly important to me; they are people I would do absolutely anything for and support no matter what. I grew up with an older brother and pretty much anybody that has one knows what that means. I remember when he first got his P’s whenever I would be in the car with him and try to drink; he would slam the breaks on and I’d spill it all over myself. Even though he is an incredible driver he can also be a crazy one when he has somewhere to be. Not to mention whenever my parents would go away, I would have to clean up his dishes for him.

I knew from the moment that I walked into Yass Valley Vet that it was the place I wanted to be. I just felt safe. After moving from the Illawarra to Yass, I had been working at a vet in Canberra. Although I enjoyed working there, I really wanted somewhere closer to home. When the opportunity arose at YVV I grabbed it straight away. The trust we put in each other is phenomenal (especially the way some of them drive!); and it’s something I value immensely.

Not only are my co-workers great people, quite quickly they felt like family! The guys are like big brothers to me. I first felt it when in the car with one of them and I tried to have a drink.... he touched the breaks and made me spill it all over myself (just like my big brother used to do). Another time (which is quite constantly) we have to clean up the dishes for them which they have left lying around. The girls are like sisters, both older and younger. Supporting each other through anything; like when I constantly injure myself in stupid ways.... who else would I want laughing at me when I cut my hand with Nail clippers! Yes the dog ones, not human ones. Or when I constantly jam my fingers in things. Even when I use metho and find a cut or scratch I did not even know existed.

Like my co-workers I have always had a love of animals. Whilst growing up I had various pets, dogs, bearded dragons, horses and even a snake. My main problem is wanting to rescue every animal that needs helping but as I’ve been told by my family many times “No Mikky”. There is nothing better than loving the place where you work, the people you work with and your patients/clients. Being able to care for sick animals is so rewarding and I love it. The fun times with my co-workers don’t hurt either!

Especially now that they feel like family.

Deja vu

Nothing like a eye full of spit and grass to help your enjoy your Saturday afternoon. Pat loved his high school work placement with YVV so much he came back and got a job! We are lucky to have you!

My Journey with the Yass Valley Veterinary began back in 2012 when I approached the clinic for a high school placement. After much discussion and promising that I’d be on my best behaviour I was given a chance to come for 2 weeks placement during the winter school holidays.

I was quickly immersed in the life of clinic, holding anxious dogs, being thrown into the air by a horse during a dental and assisting with a difficult calving. What I appreciated most about the placement was that despite my obvious lack of coordination and knowledge I was accepted as part of the team and thrown into the fray.

One specific case comes to mind when I think about my school placement time with YVV. It was a busy afternoon and Stuart had just received a call that an alpaca was struggling to give birth. (Known as an unpacking I soon learnt). We jumped into the car and sped out straight away. While I had seen calvings and lambings before this was a different matter entirely. When Alpacas are unpacking, they tend to imitate a person in excruciating pain, and this one was performing like something out of a horror film.

Unphased Stuart dived in and extricated one leg, then another and that is when we hit our first hurdle. The Cria’s extremely long neck was bent around over its back and there seemed to no hope in hades that the little fella’s head was going to come out. Stuart however knew better and was able with significant effort to twist the cria out of the womb. The little monster of a Cria appeared quite dazed in the winter sun but was soon sitting up and looking for mum.

8 years later I was starting one of my first weekends on call with great trepidation. As the Saturday morning shift came to a close, I was informed by reception that there was an alpaca unpacking! I packed the car and hit the road with a vague idea of the address, heading into an area with no reception. After an hour of bush-bashing and several attempted phone calls with the owner, I arrived at the destination to find a herd of 200 alpacas in the sheep yards. We found our struggling hembra (female alpaca) and set to work extracting the cria.

The little macho (male alpaca) was well and truly stuck with his head bent around over his back and only the left leg showing. I reached in and carefully pulled the right leg up and before I knew it the little fella whipped the left leg back in! With memories of 8 years of ago fresh in my mind I knew I had a trick up my sleeve. I quickly returned the right leg into the womb creating the space to swing his head around and up into the summer air. It wasn’t long after that the little fella was out and trying to stand.

As I stooped to assist him a clod of spit and grass landed a direct hit between my eyes! I looked up to see that the culprit was the cria’s mother who wasn’t taking to kindly to my interference and on that bomb shell it was time to leave.

Sweat, Dirt, Beach Umbrellas and Borrowed Hats

There are many uses for beach Umbrellas. But really you only want to use them while you are lazing around in the sun at the beach, Right?
Well that wasn't quite the case for our vet nurse Luke and vet Dr Stuart. But we are sure they wished it was.

Because cow poop, dirt, excessive heat and aggravated cows is why they actually needed one.

My most challenging day as a vet nurse.

It was the middle of summer and on this particular day I was rostered on to work with Dr Stuart.

I should have known that working with Stuart, chances were we weren't likely to stay in the clinic and I was right.

Just after lunch we were scheduled to preg test some cows. My first thought was "It's going to be hot"��. My second thought was "I forgot my hat". Now if you’ve seen me around, you will know that I don’t have much hair on my head, so a hat is a must!

Luckily Stuart had an extra hat in his car, and although it was a bit small for my head I was thankful for it anyway.

So, I got my overalls on and we left the clinic. We arrived about 1pm and just before we got out of the car, we checked the temperature. It read 38°C and that wasn’t even the hottest part of the day. We got out of the car and said hello to the farmer, who to our dismay was on his own. We got to work unloading everything from the car and walked it down to the yards. As we got closer to the yards we saw them - the cows.

I can’t remember if there were 300 or 400 but by the end of the day it felt like there were thousands.

We began our set up and luckily Stuart was smart enough to pack a large beach umbrella ��with him to keep him out of the sun. It was time to begin!

I was on the crush, the farmer was pushing the cows down the race, and Stuart was doing his thing at the business end of the cows. Now these cows were THE MOST STUBBORN cows I have ever dealt with��. They just wouldn’t move and then they would just bolt at the crush to escape. The farmer told me for every cow I missed I owed him a beer at the pub. Unfortunately for the farmer he had to buy his own drinks because I didn’t miss a single cow.

A few cows in and Dr Harry and nurse Emily showed up to give us a hand, but they only stayed for about an hour before they had to head back to the clinic for consults. The day felt like it was getting hotter and hotter. Then about halfway through the cows we lost the farmer. He had collapsed from the heat. So we all took a well deserved break in the shed to cool down and replenish our fluids. The farmer didn’t look in a good way, so Stuart made the decision to send him home. However, because the cows were still in the yards and agitated by the heat Stuart and I decided to keep on going so the cows could go free again and cool down.

So we carried on, this time just the two of us. Stuart was on the crush and checking the cows and I was pushing them down the race. The way the yards and race were set up we could only do about five cows at a time. So I had to separate five cows out of the group into a yard and then down the race. As I mentioned earlier, these were some stubborn cows! And to make a hard job harder, some cows had already had calves, so we had to separate the calves from the cows into another yard.

The day didn’t get any cooler, our water supplies were depleting, dehydration and frustration were setting in and the cows were only get more and more stubborn and agitated. There were a few choice words yelled at the cows, especially from Stuart��. After what felt like 6 years 125 days 19 hours and 24 minutes we finally got the last cow into the crush and ... DONE!

We let the cows out of the yard, packed everything back into the car and literally collapsed into the car. We were sore, covered in cow manure, dirt, sweat and super dehydrated but the clock showed it was almost 6pm (which means home time... Hooray ��).

That was definitely the most physically challenging day I have had at Yass Valley Veterinary but I enjoyed every minute of it.

“You won’t be here for long!!”

Does being told "You won't be here for long!" make someone want to stick around?
In the case of our Reception Manager Kiri, it sure did. She is still going strong after 9 years and 2 children.

I still remember walking through the doors of the Yass Vet Hospital. I was nervous as hell while I waited to see Heidi.

This was the first time I had attended a formal interview, as I previously worked in the racing industry and interviews were not heard of. As I walked into the room feeling those over whelming nerves, there they were! 3 very confronting faces! Now those 3 people I call great friends. The one thing that stuck with me from the interview was a question I was asked.

“How long do you think you will be here in Yass?” Shortly followed with “You won’t be here for long”.

At the time I had no idea how long I was going to be here. My partner, now husband who is a livestock agent had only been here for a short period & apparently, they do not always stay in the same town.

Fast forward 9 years and I’m still here, now working as the Reception Manager.

I can’t say it has been the easiest job mentally, but its definitely been the most satisfying and rewarding job. Second only to being a mother! Working within a great team of people makes a difference. Along with being able to help our clients loved ones stay happy & healthy. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a patient in hospital walk out the front door, knowing we have made a genuine difference.

‘One pig, one peso; big pig, two peso’!

Anyone that knows Dr Harry, they know he is a bit of a character. Below he tells an accurate ( not ) depiction of what happened on an out call when Dr Dan and Nurse Alicia joined him in the great pig wrangle of 2020. If you stick around until the end you are in for a laugh!

‘One pig, one peso; big pig, two peso’

Let’s not let facts get in the way of a good story. The following story can be confirmed by three eyewitnesses who can confirm that at least some of this story is true, for a more accurate (and more boring) account, please see the diligently detailed case notes.

On a cool Autumn day, I was approached by a fellow with a small, somewhat unusual task which he felt fell under the broad umbrella of veterinary medicine. Mixed veterinary practice brings with it all the unusual, out of the way, and uncommon animal tasks, and this was no different. The task you ask, the care of this fellow’s pet pig’s feet!

Not one to step back from a challenge, I whole heartedly agreed to this porcine pedicure! I was bolstered by the recent success of a nail in clipping in a particularly prickly Pug so I thought a particularly prickly pig would be the next step up. Boy was I wrong. I set out optimistically for this somewhat obscure problem, however, I was not totally naive, and I thought perhaps indeed that this could be a big job, so I of course brought along the secret weapon, Daniel ‘Django’ Gerrard, self-proclaimed ‘Chief Pig Wrangler’. Fortunately, it was Django’s day off and he was overly excited to watch me handle this hog. His only terms and conditions were regarding to payment, ‘one pig, one peso’. An absolute bargain I thought!

We had along with us Alicia, a fantastic nurse with experience in pigs which rivaled mine, that is to say, very limited. Alicia was also excited to see how things would turn out as I was confronted with my first piggy problem.

After a brief drive though the countryside and after a final stretch around the side of a timbered hill, we found ourselves at this site of what was to become, the infamous, ‘Great Pig Wrestle of 2020’.

In a small sty, sat a hefty sow, at least 350 kilograms (it gets bigger every time I tell it). Upon seeing my baconer patient, the first misgivings began to enter my mind. Here I was, a new grad vet, dealing with my first hoggy hurdle, armed only with advice I’d read in a textbook, which now seemed woefully inadequate. Daniel, who by this point is starting to sense my concerns, carefully looks at me before saying in a calming voice, “just consider this a great learning opportunity”, before starting to giggle at my present dilemma.

After introductions were made to the owner, we met our cantankerous patient, ‘Hogzilla’ (name changed for the pig’s privacy). ‘Hogzilla’ was a fine pig specimen, who’d been fattened on pumpkins and squash and other assorted garden produce. She was as tall as she was wide and twice as long, she had a long fierce snout and two beady eyes, glinting with rage. Her curly tail twitched as she watched our approach. She snorted and huffed and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. On closer inspection, once immediate terror had settled, we saw her problem, her front toes had grown and curled with age and were now causing her some grief.

In these cranky creatures, sedation is a must, so I was back to the vehicle to grab a little bit of ‘soothe in a syringe’. Once I’d drawn up my dose, I just had the minor inconvenience of getting it into the provoked porker. The problem was solved simply by reaching over the fence as ‘Hogzilla’ walked by snorting through the rails, and sticking the needle into her rounded rear end. Surprisingly, this went off without a hitch. I injected the sedation with barely a hiccup from ‘Hogzilla’.

Then we sat back and waited. Five minutes passed. Ten minutes passed. Fifteen minutes passed. Nothing. ‘Hogzilla’ stood still, staring furiously back at us. You can only imagine my disappointment (and fear).

As vets, and particularly new grad vets, we want to get the right amount, of the right sedation, into the right animal, every time. It seems that this wasn’t going to be the case, this time. I wasn’t too proud to say that I’d underestimated our patient’s size and weight and attitude. So I trudged back to the car and drew up more sedation.

Round two of ‘poke a needle into the backside of a displeased pig’ began, and surprisingly, it all went well, again. Quietly confident that we were on to a winner now, I collected the hoof trimming gear as we waited. This time, things were more successful, with ‘Hogzilla’s’ irate eyes slowly drooping, until eventually she lay down, sedate. Unfortunately, that was the end of our sedation effects, and although she was down, she was still wide awake and not wanting to be handled. We still had the task of rolling her on her side and trimming her feet. I’ll be honest, if it was just me, that would have been it, there was no chance my lean frame was going to be shifting that pile of pig anywhere.

But of course, the secret weapon. Enter, ‘Django’, our chief pig wrestler. Standing at six foot four, and weighing in at 96 kilos of rippling muscle, undefeated in eleventeen bouts, our champion.

But this was going to be his toughest battle yet, an even though ‘Hogzilla’ was sedated, I was worried this pig might prove too much, oh boy I was wrong.

He rolled up his sleeves and flew on in, there were squeals, there were howls, there were yells, there were yowls. He wrestled and wrastled and snaffled and spat, there was dust, there was mud there was all kinds of sludge, and then, just like that, this big piggy problem was a small swine solution. ‘Hogzilla’ tamed, lying peacefully on her side.

I went to work with my hoof trimmers as Django held ‘Hogzilla’s’ head, and in moments, it was done. Alicia politely smirked, ‘well, I’m not sure what all the fuss was about’.

We left ‘Hogzilla’ to snooze off her sedation and we returned to the car, happy that things had gone well. As I was packing a few things away, Django turned to me a quietly said, “one pig, one peso; big pig, two peso”.

Which I still thought was a pretty good deal.

Public Holidays... Not for a Vet Nurse

Heidi is one of our longest standing staff members. Things started casually and progressed very quickly. She has become accustom to being called into work for emergencies in the middle of her days off. But it is obvious by her time with Yass Valley Veterinary that she loves her job and wouldn't change it for the world!

I remember my job interview at YVV very well.. I hobbled in on crutches and was immediately directed to the morning tea room and poured a cup of tea. It was a very informal chat to say the least but I knew straight away that I wanted to be part of the team.

Growing up with a mixture of pets and livestock, I always felt that helping animals was what I was meant to do and sure enough, a few days later I got the call that I was the successful applicant and was to start the following week. Which made my first official day at Yass Valley Veterinary the same day as my 18th birthday!

Being a vet nurse isn’t just a job-it’s a way of life. Many special occasions/ public holidays get interrupted by animals not realising it’s meant to be a day off for us!!

For example..

My birthday- got called in for a caesarean.

Easter- Dog badly hurt itself when it fell off the back of a truck.

Mother’s day dinner- had to assist with a horse transport truck fire on the high way.

Taking my father for surgery- had to help out with a horse that had fallen down on the float on the way over.

Christmas- Cat bitten by a snake.

And one time I was in the middle of a friend’s wedding rehearsal when I got the call to head in to work for an emergency.

The list goes on and on and it’s the same for all of our other dedicated staff. I guess my first official day on the job should have been a pretty good indicator of how my life was about to change!

I have met so many lovely clients and their pets over the years I feel privileged to be part of their lives. I have seen clients and their pets and their best and their worst, at all hours of the night and day whether it be for a simple stitch up of a wound, assisting with a caesarean or a late night calving.

People often ask why I have stayed at Yass Valley Veterinary for so long. Making a genuine difference in the lives of our clients and patients is an amazing experience.

Knowing that at the end of the day you have helped out a distressed patient, an anxious client, saved a life, helped with bringing new life into the world or just meeting a new puppy and its excited family is what gets me out of bed everyday. I also tell them it helps that I work in an amazing team, with lovely clients and their wonderful animals- and of course, it really is the best job in the world!

I lived in the Yass Valley until around age 11 when we moved to a property in Rye Park.

As long as I can remember we loved to visit my Pop’s farm in Murrumbateman where he ran cattle and sheep. My dad is also a pretty handy farmer and full time shearer. He would let us come to work with him often, so I thought I knew a little bit about animals....

Then I got a job at the Yass Valley Veterinary as a casual receptionist and well, MIND BLOWN!

I love my days at the Yass or Murrumbateman Veterinary Hospital, as no two days are EVER the same.

A few weeks after I started a client called and wanted to organise a euthanasia for a sick pet snake.Of course the the vets said “not a problem”. Not long after this call a client arrived with a crock pot. Not realising this was the client that had not long ago called, I peered into the pot and to my surprise it was filled to the brim with a pet python not doing so well.

Vet nursing really isn't for the faint hearted. You have to be a special kind of person. Danni however, is that special kind of person.
She would like to instill one piece of advice on her younger self! "ALWAYS KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED!".

I started with Yass Valley Veterinary back in 2014 as a shy and quiet vet nursing student with little experience in the industry. It was quite intimidating walking into the clinic for the first time surrounded by so many skilled staff members. I remember the two most experienced nurses, Heidi and Anita rushing around assisting the vets with an emergency snake bite and thinking to myself how incredible they were and how much I wanted to be like them.

Growing up with multiple animals in our house hold somewhat prepared me for the job I had just walked in to. But if I had one piece of advice to give anyone wanting to become a veterinary nurse, that would be ‘it’s not all puppies and kittens’.

The hardest part of nursing is without a doubt euthanising a loved family member. I always get asked “ do you get used to it?” or “do you get sad?” and honestly, you never really get used to it. You just develop different coping mechanisms. Generally, when euthanising animals, they are very old and sick so euthanasia is the kindest thing for them. However once the animal is no longer suffering it becomes the owner who suffers and that there, is part the gets to me.

On a lighter note, I can’t recall one day that I was not covered in some sort of animal bodily fluid. There are many aspects of nursing that require you to have quite a strong stomach. Some of the regular occurrences include being urinated on by a nervous puppy or getting projectile anal gland fluid to the face. On farm visits you get covered in cow faeces or sneezed on by a horse with a nosebleed and l et me tell you that nothing spreads blood quite like a happy dog with an open tail wound. On the very rare occasion you are not covered in it, someone else is! That is when you also need thick skin and a good sense of humour. Because 9 times out of 10, a work colleague will have seen the incident and they will not refrain from laughing. If I could go back and tell my younger self one piece of advice it would be to “ALWAYS KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED”.

Although this all sounds very off putting and you would question anyone who would willingly put themselves through this, I have to say I absolutely love my job. The good days generally out weigh the bad. Your day can be instantly made by a litter of 6 week old puppies to cuddle (vaccinate and microchip of course), or if the vet is booked in to go out pregnancy testing cattle and needs an assistant to help in the yards. You are constantly growing and learning every day which is exactly why I stuck to it and am now training and teaching younger nurses as the nurse supervisor.

Furthermore, I would not be able to do this job if not for the people I work with. We all have the same love and compassion for our animals and our jobs. You know that you work in a great environment when you want to spend time with your colleges on the weekend after being with them for a 10-hour shift. The team at Yass Valley Veterinary are practically a family, and they have been a massive contributor to the person I am today.

Imagine being 19 years old and learning a new job. Only to have life or death emergencies in front of you, time and time again. Georgie explains how rewarding it is when they get to reunite with their owners after emergencies like these.

Hi! My name is Georgie Paton and I’m 19 years old.

I’m currently a trainee vet nurse with YVV, I have a beautiful dog named snatch and I love working as a vet nurse here at YVV.
I started doing placement here 6 months ago when I was offered a job 1 month into my placement ( BEST DAY EVER!!! )

When I got this job I thought OMG this is going to be amazing! Puppies and kitten all day every day! Wrong! It is maybe 10% of the animals/cases we deal with and no two days are the same ever….

So within the first couple of months I realised that my life was not just about puppies and kittens. In my first few months the thing I dealt with most frequently was snake bites.

Let me tell you that snake bites are an EMERGENCY!

So I was pretty much thrown in the deep end and I had to swim and I mean really swim. It’s always quite emotional time when snake bite victims come in and no amount of schooling can prepare a nurse for some of the stuff they go through when these animal emergencies come in. It takes a strong person to be a nurse and be able to remain professional in horrific, crazy and emotional times.

When a patient comes in for a snake bite and you spend so much time dedicated to saving it's life, they become so important to you and all your focus is making sure they survive and are going to go and see their loving families again. It truly is a rewarding feeling.

So yes, I had to deal with some really emotional and crazy days but the good days defiantly outweigh the bad. Especially when at the end of the day your patients get to go home and live their best lives with their families. I wouldn’t change this job for the world, it’s a very rewarding and satisfying job. No matter the outcome good or bad there are always lessons to be learnt.

When Rhiannan applied for a position at YVV, she thought she was just getting a job. But she ended up with so much more.

I’ve been a veterinary nurse coming up 10 years this year I have worked in many veterinary hospitals, working with animals is something I’ve always done and it’s something I’ll always love. At the time I phoned and applied for a position at for Yass Valley Veterinary, I can honestly say that life was dealing me some difficult cards. I was much relieved when I was informed that I had got the position and was to start the very next week.

Starting a new job anywhere can be very daunting but starting a new job in a small town (not knowing a single person) in a veterinary practice with 30+ staff members is exceptionally daunting. There were so many new faces and names to remember and just when you think you’ve got them all correct you see a new face on a different shift. Also learning new policies and procedures that come with starting at a new practice

Each and every staff member made me feel so welcome, they were all so kind and accommodating to any questions or concerns I had.

Working in the veterinary industry, I am very aware that this industry has one of the highest suicide rates of any other profession. Yass Valley Veterinary truly cares about their employees and their mental health… We all work as a team and look out for each other inside and outside of work hours.

The first week of work for me at Yass valley veterinary involved a well being session by which all staff members took an hour out of their day and left the building to do an activity together in regards to our mental health and well being. I’ve never worked in a practice who cares so much about its employees, and at this point I knew I wanted to stay!

As the weeks went by, I eventually remembered everyone’s names and developed friendships that I know will last a lifetime.

12 months on and I now think of the employees of YVV as a family rather than coworkers.

I am forever grateful for my Yass Valley Veterinary Family!

Just Like Christmas...

You really don't know what to expect next when working as a receptionist at Yass Valley Veterinary. Deann knows this all too well after being presented with a mysterious box on one of her shifts.

Yass Valley Veterinary is committed to the health and well being of all types of animals.

Most people don’t know that the practice is very diverse when it comes to the range of injured wildlife that is brought in. The vets have a broad knowledge when it comes to wildlife and most times are torn between head and heart when making the right decision to the welfare of the animal.

I, as one of the receptionists for the practice are the front-line staff. I have learnt when a member of the public is carrying a cardboard box through the front door. Anything is possible.

Just like Christmas…. you don’t know what to expect inside the box and your anticipation grows while they describe to you in detail where they picked this animal up from and asking you ‘do you think the vet can save this one”? In the back of your mind you are already thinking do I want to open this box? is it going to scratch, flap, squeak or bite!

The exciting part of my job is that every day I get to learn something new. On this particular day a kind gentleman came in carrying a box he said to me “it’s alright I have already called Wires the wildlife rescue team and one of their members are on their way to collect it”…I asked him “what type of animal have you picked up’? As I was reaching across to accept the box, he replied “a baby bat!” Well I know you are supposed to love all creatures great and small. but I do have some hesitation when it comes to bats. The only thing I knew about them was that you are not supposed to touch them! To my amazement there was a bat rescue carer that was willing to pick this little baby up, take it home and place it in an incubator for a couple of months until the weather warmed up. What I learnt that day was that bats cannot move their wings in winter and there are some very kind people who give up their time helping to save our beautiful wildlife even a bat.

The best part of my job is that you go home at the end of the day with a lot of self-satisfaction knowing that you have made a difference to someone else’s day.

Where you have a Wit, you have a way!

How sweet it is to be loved by you.... Wit loves visiting us here at YVV and Dr Fiona and many other staff members have a wonderful bond with this sweet pooch.

Over the last 8 years, I have seen many memorable cases. I have seen lots of interesting cases. I have seen lots of weird cases. But I have never seen a case of a dog with such unshakable happiness and perseverance as Wit (and the dedication of his owner!).

Wit is a lovely two-and-a-half-year-old spaniel who presented to us last January for multiple grass seed abscesses under his armpits and belly. Despite removal of as many grass seeds as we could find and lots of nice medication, we suspect the grass seeds introduced an unusual bacteria under Wit’s skin, and Wit developed a significant infection throughout the skin to his belly. Unfortunately, it became necessary for him to be hospitalised and the compromised skin surgically removed. We were horrified to find that the infection had spread from the start of his chest to between his hind legs, and almost half way up the sides of his body. With plastic surgery techniques we were able to close as much of the open wound as possible but there was still a large area of open tissue that required bandaging while the skin grew back.

Now you would assume that if you had that proportion of your body healing, you’d feel a bit despondent. Not wanting to move that much. Curl up and watch Netflix. Not Wit! Wit was a little trooper who perked up once the devitalised tissue was removed, and ate his critical care diet with gusto. He was interested in going for walks outside and having cuddles with the staff. He was discharged a few days after his surgery for some TLC at home. This was the beginning of a long road to recovery for Wit and his owner.

Wit came in every four days for two months for intensive bandage changes. I’d be pretty sick of my doctor if I had to seem them that often. Not Wit! Wit pulled to get into the building and say hi to all his friends. He pulled to get out the back so we could change his bandage. He stood nicely on the treatment table for his bandage changes, and licked us as we itched his growing skin for him.

Wit got to have all the colours of bandage as his wounds healed and it became a joke as to what colour he’d be fashioning this week. He progressed to having a lovely string vest that covered his body from his neck to his hind legs to secure the manuka honey dressings on without rubbing on his legs. He got leg warmer style socks on his hind legs so he wouldn’t scratch the itchy growing tissue.

Wit’s final check for his wounds took place at the beginning of May, after four months and 17 visits to the vet. He has fully healed, with only mild tightness to one small area of skin – Wit doesn’t seem to notice at all.

Wit loves coming in for routine appointments now because everyone greets him by name and pats him as he goes by. I love seeing how happy he is with us and the amazing journey he has had with us – it makes all the blood, sweat and tears of our job worthwhile.

And really, it just proves, you can’t keep a good Wit down!

Home sweet home...

When Charlotte came to Yass 13 years ago, she never thought she would still be here working as a Vet for Yass Valley Veterinary. But boy is she glad she did!

After finishing our vet degree thirteen years ago, my best friend, who I met at University, asked me to come to Australia with her for five months. “It will be beneficial for our English, and we can meet flying vets” she said. I promptly replied “I’d rather explore South America”. A few days later, however, after she cheekily managed to convince me, we started planning our trip on the condition we’d work separately as backpackers to avoid speaking French and travel together between jobs.

In September 2007, I landed in Oz, in Yass precisely. I found a job in a horse stud, and within a few weeks, I met a handsome farmer who I now proudly call my husband.

Now, you are probably wondering why I am writing about my personal life when this story is supposed to be on one interesting story I experienced as a vet. Well, it’s because I’m thrilled to be practising as a vet in Australia and the very reason why I decided to share this story with you. Life is one big adventure (as Peter Rabbit constantly tells my 3-year-old), full of surprises and compromises. For years, my husband and I couldn’t decide if our life was going to end up here or in France. So for years, I procrastinated sitting the National Veterinarian Examination (NVE); which would allow me to become a vet in Australia.

Today things have changed. We have decided to base our life in Yass. It has helped me to take some significant steps forward. Last year in April while in London and after having given birth to my second beautiful child, I managed to pass the first part of the NVE. Resulting in me being employed by Yass Valley Veterinary as a Veterinarian. YVV is just the best mixed practice to work in. I fully appreciate where I am today because for so long, I was unable to participate in my profession of choice. I am passionate about my work, I love meeting and treating animals. Small or large, domestic or wild. I’ve tried different jobs but nothing has brought me as much joy, satisfaction, (stress!) and fun as working with this wonderful team and in this great community. Where every day I am faced with a load of surprises and challenges. Thirteen years ago, when I was sitting my final exams, I’d never have thought I’d be here holding a screaming Cockatoo, an emblematic Kookaburra, a cold Blue tongue lizard or the most adorable Wallaroo rescued from a cave!

I’m also happy to announce that a few days ago we adopted a rescue Labrador cross puppy from ARF, full of cuteness. Owning a dog was on my wish list for so long, but I never committed to it as we were on planes too often. Another small sacrifice… However after a little household debate, my three year old daughter and I decided we couldn’t wait any longer! Since November, we have also had Tiger living with us, a rescue cat. She’s beautiful and very playful (and resilient) with our kids! Now, I wonder if life could possibly get any better?!

Puppies, Puppies, PUPPIES!!

When I started working for the Yass Valley Veterinary Team back in June, I had no idea what to expect. I had never worked as receptionist before, and what I knew about animals I had learnt from growing up on a farm. I had expected the job to be hard because vet clinics can be a very emotional place for people, so I had prepared myself for that part of the job. What I was not prepared for was the vast amount of ‘Vet Speak’ I would encounter from not only vets and nurses, But even some clients. Despite this, I quickly learnt a plethora of information about different types of animals, their illnesses, medications and treatments. After feeling very overwhelmed in my first few months, I started to get more confident, largely thanks to the amazing team I work with, who always take the time to answer my questions or explain something to me. I thoroughly enjoy coming to work every day, because I get to have a laugh with the supportive staff, talk to the amazing clients and see all the gorgeous animals that come through our doors.

The best experience I have had at work happened after-hours. We had a client call just before closing; he had a pregnant dog that was due to give birth any day, and she had started leaking green discharge.

Now I’m no vet, but I do know that bodily fluid should not be green, so I told him to come right down. He arrived and was called straight out the back. After closing the front of shop, I went out the back to see where they were up to, and I was handed a towel. The vets were performing a caesarean to deliver 9 puppies and it was all hands-on deck. As I was waiting in line to collect my puppy, my face could only have been described as horrified amazement. That however, only lasted a moment, as I was soon handed a newborn puppy to rub and help to start breathing. It was incredible to watch them start to breathe and wiggle around as they came to life. I got to experience firsthand the miracle of life, and with puppies no less.

Who doesn’t love puppies? It still brings a smile to my face that I was able to be a part of something truly magical.

We all love a happy ending and for one special Puss and his owners, Louise and the team were able to make this come true!

As a receptionist in a mixed practice my day is never the same from one day to the next. There is always something interesting happening. From advice to new puppies and kittens owners (yes I do love a cuddle when I get a chance), emergencies as they come in or call through, pet owners needing advice and dealing with the ever evolving schedule of the day. However my favorite thing is seeing all the pets and their families. Watching them all grow and finding out what it the latest thing going on in their lives.

Once particularly memorable day we had a full schedule of surgeries, consults and a last minute emergency horse call . All equipment had been gathered and packed in the vet car while I was confirming the directions. The vet and vet nurse left for the treatment of the horse. In the midst of the chaos a gentleman had come in and waited patiently to explain that he had a cat in the car he would like us to look at.

He and his family had been staying in a campground in Bowning and they had picked up a cat that kept hanging around. Although it looked very matted and a little thin, it did not appear to be a stray. The family was due to head home and the girls didn’t want to leave the cat out there. I followed the man out to the car with the microchip scanner to see a rather matted but cuddled cat in the laps of 2 girls in the back of the car. I was able to do a quick scan for a microchip and luckily it came up.

I returned to the computer and began to search the microchip details in our system. We didn’t get a result in our system but had found a result in the national microchip register.

I was able to speak to one of the contacts listed under the microchip. “Hello this is Louise, I’m calling from the Yass Valley Veterinary I have Coco here with us. He has been brought in to be scanned. Is this your cat?” The owner was silent. “I’m sorry what? Has fluffy been brought in there? You found the body?” The owner was getting teary over the phone. “No, he is alive, a little thin and a few matts, he was found in Bowning.” “Are you sure?? He has been missing for 3 months! He’s alive?”. I replied “Yes, your details having been found on the chip I had scanned”. A very emotional owner “I can’t believe this… we gave up hope… wait, where are you? We live in Canberra, how did he get there…my kids will be so happy, I’m leaving work now…”

The camping family said their goodbyes and one of our vets gave Coco a quick check over for any injuries.

The very happy owner called on the way again to get directions and couldn’t believe he was alive and uninjured.

We can only credit this happy ending to the fact that this cat was micro-chipped at their local vet clinic and it shows just how important this actually is.

I have been working in Yass Valley Veterinary now for almost 3 years. I can honestly say it is a place I love to work at. The team is one of the best bunch of people I have worked with and I enjoy working for a local business that is part of the community.

Making A Difference!

Dr Alex has treated her fair share of Patients since joining the Team at YVV in 2016, but these are some of her more memorable ones. From Bucking Bulls to Little puppies, SHE DOES IT ALL!! And isn't afraid of a "Little" Poop!

I started as a fresh-faced graduate veterinarian with Yass Valley Veterinary in 2016! It’s a bit surreal that I’m already reaching my fourth year with the team. I feel so at home in the Yass Valley because of the variable & always interesting case load, strong community values & clients who allow me the opportunity to assist in keeping their beloved animals healthy & happy.

One of the things I absolutely love is that our team always has a can-do attitude. It was a very hot, dry summer day last year when my nurse Brodie and I were scheduled for pregnancy testing 150 cows on a farm about 30 minutes out of town. When we arrived to, lets say a very basic yard, I then noticed that there were far more than 150 cows in the yards & paddocks behind. I asked the farmer how many we were checking for pregnancy, he then replied with 450!

This was one the first times that Brodie had been with me & experienced the joy of dust, heat & a ridiculous amount of cow poo. We rang the clinic to let them know we’d be a fair while longer & we got stuck in.

On this day, the farmer had several things he had to do including walking cows back to their paddocks, so it was largely a girl-power effort. Brodie was constantly jumping over yard rails to run a few more cows into the forcing yard, pushing them down the race to me, then changing draft gates to keep the empty (not pregnant) cows separate from the ones who were pregnant.

By the end of the day we were EXHAUSTED ! But proud of what we’d achieved with mostly just the two of us. Since this day the yards have been vastly improved & far more efficient for such a big job, which is always appreciated. I’ve also learnt to ask who will be there to help on the day.

It wasn’t long after this day that the clinic had received a phone call for a Bucking Bull who had been drooling & very lethargic. I went out to this farm to examine the bull, named Stealth who had evidently hurt himself in a paddock accident & fractured his jaw. Without hesitation, his owner & contractor advised me to do whatever was necessary to fix Stealth.

I then called on the back up of my ever-supportive boss, Stuart. We then wired up his jaw so that it was able to heal. Since the 8 weeks of nursing & pain management by his owner, he has gone on to win a national title & perform at an elite level. He’s one to watch & a real testament to the commitment of his owner.

I’ll always have a real soft spot for cattle but it’s not just large animal stories that I really get a kick out of, even if it’s some un-godly hour in the morning, which is exactly what happened when I received a 4am phone call for a German Shepherd who had been in active labour for far too long & no puppies had been passed.

We all came into the clinic & I examined her. I then ultra-sounded the puppies & determined by their low heart rate that they were in foetal distress & needed to be removed via caesarean. After which I made the call to wake up one of wonderful nurses to help me. That very “ EARLY ” morning, we were privileged to deliver 9 healthy puppies. A few of them went to local homes & from time to time, I see them out on a walk or in the clinic for routine health visits.

I am finding now that I’ve been able to follow a few long-term cases through & really feel that I am making a positive, genuine difference to a family. I love being a part of the Yass Valley Veterinary team & wouldn’t change it.

Redbull give you wings!

Have you met Dr Dan? If you have you know that he is not built for small spaces. But as you will read below, he sure will make himself fit if its life or death...

A few months ago I attended an outcall to a cow that had something hanging out near her rear end. I had nothing more than an address and directions to get to the yards from the front gate. When I arrived, there was a huge padlock on the front gate!! (I should have taken this as a bad omen, turned around and gone back to the clinic). After trying to contact the owner for several minutes, I decided to walk to the yards, following my very detailed directions. Unfortunately distance was never mentioned in these directions and after 3km, a few encounters with some kangaroos and one very minor stumble, I arrived at the rather decrepit looking yards. Although relieved I had found the yards, there was a distinct lack of “cow” and people to be at the right location. After trying to call the owner several more times and sitting at the yards for about 20 minutes, I decided to continue walking through the paddocks and see if I could find anyone.

I casually strolled through the paddocks, as I let the girls at the clinic know I was going to be late getting back, when all of a sudden I heard a car horn beeping. Naturally, I decided to head towards this noise. As I got closer and closer to the noise, I began to here people’s voices and could even make out the odd profanity. Finally, I could see the vehicle (2015 Toyota Hilux – dual cab – this is important for later in the story) and the people that were making this noise, as I reached the top of the damn bank.

To my amazement, there was a man, partially clothed, on a horse, in the middle of the dam, that was being chased by a very agitated Brahman cross cow. After taking this spectacle in for a few seconds and then gathering my composure, I calmly started walking towards the vehicle that was located on the other side of the dam to both have a chat to the owner and also to see if I could visualize what was hanging out the back end of the cow. During this time, the very protective mother cow happened to notice me walking in the direction of her precious new born calf that I didn’t know at the time, was sitting in the shade of a tree behind the dam bank that I was now casually strolling across.

Like a great white shark (obviously a little slower – but she was definitely swimming at this stage) she changed both direction and target and began heading towards me. I calmly increased my relaxed walk to a light jog and reached the Toyota Hilux which I thought would provide adequate protection from this now very angry cow. To both my and the drivers amazement, the cow then continued up the dam bank, gathering both speed and momentum and frantically chased me around the ute several times. As I not so politely yelled at the driver of the dual cab ute to open the door and let me in, the enraged cow, inched closer to me and my green overalls. After the third lap of the ute, the driver finally managed to open the rear passenger door, however she didn’t have time to inform me that there was a child’s car seat and the highest mountain of empty red bull cans I have ever seen in my life. Given this was not the time to be discussing car cleanliness, I not so gracefully leaped through the remaining space and quickly slammed the door shut behind me. I was alive!

As I sat there amongst the red bull cans, breathing like a steam engine and gathering my thoughts, I heard an almighty thud and noticed that the car seemed to be rocking a little more than it should be. This very passionate mother cow had decided to give us one more parting gift and leave a massive head print in the panel of the side door, that I had recently climbed in. Finally, the cow trotted over to inspect her calf and to my udder disbelief, there was now nothing hanging out the back end of the cow. It turns out she had fetal membranes that had passed with all the running about.

When I finally arrived back at my vehicle, a little shaken, but mostly relieved!! I was greeted by my lovely vet nurse, who proceeded to tell me what a fantastic time she was having sitting in the car. Listening to music and responding to a months worth of emails she just couldn’t find the time to get to.

What did I learn from this experience:

1. Always have an exit strategy in place.

2. Never underestimate the pace and or determination of a recently calved cow.

3 . I ts amazing what a small space you can fit through in what seems like a life or death situation!

When it rains, It pours!

For Loren, one of our Senior Vet Nurses some days are better then others. But she sure shows us why she loves her position here with YVV!

My journey began with Yass Valley Veterinary as a trainee vet nurse almost 6 years ago & I have no hesitation in saying that it’s the best & most emotional adventure I could have expected. I love what I do & there isn’t a week that goes by that I haven’t left work without gaining new experiences, new knowledge, strengths & never without feeling either joy or sadness through patients who have touched my heart. There’s no denying that in a mixed practice hospital like ours there is no 2 days ever the same, each day you turn up to work & you will never be certain where or you might end up before the day ends – that’s one of the things I love most about nursing.

Thinking about this always takes me back to a day earlier in my time at Yass Valley Veterinary. I was an eager trainee nurse & always keen to jump in to do anything, this particular winters day was warm & mild, I had been working away in the clinic all morning doing the usual endless cleaning, preparing & recovering patients from surgery, treating hospital patients, puppy vaccinations, farewelling 4 legged loved ones & negotiating my way around the occasional snappy & unhappy patient. After lunch bought all new excitement to me, one of the vets were preparing to head out on an out call & they needed a nurse. I eagerly helped get all the equipment ready, packed the car & off we went - little did I know how much my naive mind would be expanded as I learned (literally) about the “ins & outs” of what’s involved fertility testing 30 bulls, I’m a lot more experience with it now but we don’t need to go into that right now… please!

We were running a little late by the time we finished, it was starting to get dark & a nasty looking storm was on the way, we were pleased to be finished just in time. We started our 45-minute drive back to the clinic & as we reached phone reception we found a few missed calls from the clinic, we called back to discover that there was a heifer having trouble calving close by (but still so far from the clinic). We briskly turned the vehicle around & off we went to find the property, we started driving through the paddocks in search of the cattle yards & owner when it started to absolutely pour down with rain & the thunder rumbled through the ground. I was filled with adrenaline to see my first calving, which was probably in my favour because it distracted me from the drenching rain. But! Within no time things had escalated quickly & I found myself seeing my first ever cow caesarean instead. There was very little time for any strategy plans or instructions from the vet as we were all too busy shivering & being saturated straight through to the skin, so I had to learn everything on the fly. I’m please to say that cow caesareans seem a lot more natural to me now then what I was feeling that day, I definitely got a whole new insight into the inside of a cow’s abdomen & when the vet asked you to hold EVERYTHING in while they stitch up, they really, really mean HOLD everything in! ...it took everything I physically had to hold "IT" in! Some might call me mad, but I recall thinking ‘how cool is this!’

I still remember my feeling of confusion when the calf was whisked out through the abdomen & draped over the cattle yard fence by its hind legs, I soon realised it was obviously to help drain all the fluid from his lungs. Once the stitch up process was well underway, I had the task of removing the calf from the fence to dry him down & get him moving - this was easier said than done! I might also add that it was still pouring with ice cold rain & It’s quite difficult to drag a soggy, lanky calf off the top rail of a cattle yard fence. Towels were in short supply, so I found myself reaching for anything remotely absorbent - overalls, our own dry, spare clothes & jackets, whatever I could find. As we were finishing up the rain & thunder was kind enough to ease off so mum & calf could recover in peace. With well-earned success upon us we left the property for our long, tired drive home, feeling saturated, frozen & hungry.

After the grueling clean-up of all the gear & surgery packs back in the clinic it was finally home time. I treated myself to some cheeky McDonalds drive through on my way home followed by a hot shower & sleep so I could get up before the sun rises in the morning to do it all again - if that doesn’t sound like fun to you then that’s ok, we seem to be a different breed of human to some.

I’ve had many more exhausting shifts since then & although it leaves me feeling completely over done sometimes there’s always the significant better moments that get me through every time. Plus! I never forget the amazing people I get to work beside every day that make the hard times more bearable & the good times that much more amazing.

It’s all in a day’s work, we aren’t patting puppies & kittens all day !

It’s not the money we are here for, we each have our own unique reasons for doing what we do in this fast paced industry. But I can confidently say the one thing that we all feel in common is the appreciation that we can make a difference in an animals life & be an advocate for them when they can’t speak for themselves.

Snake bites in dogs and cats.

It's important to know the signs of snake bite to look for in your pet.

Not all snakes are created equal, as such the bite from a brown snake can have different effects on your pet than that from of a black snake.

Brown Snake bites often have a RAPID onset of signs including, but not limited to;
• Vomiting, diarrhoea
• Weakness in the legs – starting at the hindlegs
• Laboured breathing
• Floppy paralysis (particularly cats)
• Sudden collapse

Black Snake bites often have a SLOWER onset of clinical signs;
• Vomiting, diarrhoea
• Weakness, or wobbly when walking
• Laboured breathing
• Blood in urine
• Lethargy, muscle pain, reluctance to move
• Dark red gums
• Swellings or discharge from the bite site

At the clinic we are able to assess your pet, and perform tests to aid in the diagnosis of snake bite. If we suspect snake bite, we inject antivenom into your pet, and support them with intravenous fluids and pain relief. They are often in hospital for several days whilst recovering, and unfortunately despite best efforts, some do not survive.

Desexing your dog.

Why desexing is important?

Desexing isn’t just about preventing unwanted pregnancies, it can actually make your dog healthier and happier.

Desexed dogs:

are better protected from certain illnesses and diseases
are generally less aggressive towards other dogs
tend to be more affectionate
are less inclined to roam or mark their territory
are less inclined to display mating behaviours such as mounting

Some research shows desexed dogs actually live longer. The RSPCA practises early age desexing from the age of eight weeks when the surgery is simple and recovery is rapid. If your puppy was not desexed prior to sale, they must be desexed before they are able to produce any unintended litters of puppies. There is absolutely no benefit in letting females have one litter before they are desexed.

Talk to your vet about desexing, microchipping and vaccinations. They’re all important parts of being a responsible dog owner and will ensure your new best friend stays healthy and happy.
